I played with the old (circa 2003 iirc) game Rise of Nations this weekend while waiting for someone to reply to e-mail inquiries and I ran into a strange flickering problem that nobody seems to have reported on the interwebs, so I thought I would post the solution I found.
Editing the ron2.ini file and setting ForceAGPVBs=1 resolved the issue for me. Previously the graphics had flickered heavily - especially relating to text boxes. None of the older solutions (expading resource windows or disabling vsync) worked for me, but this did. BTW, this was on a 2012 Mac Mini running Windows 7.

I have Intel HD Graphics 4600 and it is flickering too much. Above solution does not work for me. Any idea what to do.
ReplyDeleteYou are awesome. Worked perfectly!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the post
OH MY GOD THANK YOU!!
ReplyDeleteOkay i looked everywhere, tried everything and my final problem was actually FINDING the INI file (it was hidden). So everybody on windows 7 here's the exact process to follow.
1. Start the game for the first time and try to run it. Accept the terms, etc. and run the game, get the flickering, then quit. The ini file doesn't seem to show up until you run it once.
2. click start, run then type the following "%appdata%\microsoft games\rise of nations then click Ok.
(see bottom if the rise2.ini file is hidden)
3. Edit in notepad as stated above. It now works.
* If you can't find the ini file go to control panel, folder options, view, then check "view hidden files" and uncheck "hide protected OS files". the next time you do step 2, you should see the INI file. Actually FINDING the INI file took me more research than anything else!
Thankyou, I almost gave up hope finding a sdolution. Thankyou everyone.
ReplyDeleteWorked great. Disabling vsync didn't work for me either.
ReplyDeleteThanks.
tried but did not worked on my laptop
ReplyDeleteit worked thanks a lot
ReplyDeleteIt definitely works!
ReplyDeleteI have just encountered this problem with windows 10.
ReplyDeleteTry as I might I simply CANNOT find the hidden file even though advised correctly by a technician, no less, as to what to check and uncheck, It is as if the ini file I am lookin for does not exist, for repeated sunning of the search gives no result found even though I have started the game as suggested here . If I can't find it I can't edit the file and the game is unplayable. Help please
Hi guys...I hope you'll can help me.
